How to store and use sodium carbonate properly?

Mar 13,2025

Calcium chloride desiccant has strong hygroscopicity and should be stored in dry and sealed environment to prevent it from absorbing moisture in the air and becoming invalid before use.

Proper storage and use of sodium carbonate requires the following points:

Storage

Environment selection: It should be stored in a cool and well-ventilated warehouse. Avoid direct sunlight, keep away from fire source and heat source, the temperature of the warehouse should not exceed 30℃ and the relative humidity should not exceed 80%.

Packing requirements: Sodium carbonate is easy to absorb moisture, and should be packed in well-sealed packages. Commonly, it is packed in woven bag lined with plastic bag, or in barrel or can. Ensure that the package is not damaged and prevent the entry of external moisture.

Classification and storage: Store it separately from acids, oxidizers, edible chemicals, etc. Do not mix and store. Because sodium carbonate will react violently with acids, and contact with oxidizers may cause danger.

Use

Personal protection: When using sodium carbonate, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, such as protective glasses and rubber gloves. Avoid contact of sodium carbonate powder with eyes, skin and respiratory tract to prevent injury. In case of inadvertent contact with skin or eyes, flush immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.

Dissolving operation: When dissolving sodium carbonate, it should be added to water slowly and stirred constantly to prevent local overheating or lumping. Since sodium carbonate will be exothermic when dissolved, attention should be paid to safety during the dissolution process to avoid splashing of the solution.

Dosage control: accurately control the dosage of sodium carbonate according to the specific purpose of use and demand. For example, in water treatment, according to the water hardness and acidity and alkalinity and other indicators, to calculate the appropriate dosage; in food processing, it is more important to use in strict accordance with the dosage of food safety standards, to prevent overdosage on human health hazards.

Using environment: Use sodium carbonate in a well-ventilated environment, especially when it is used in large quantities or when it generates dust, make sure that the operating environment has good ventilation conditions, so as to discharge the dust and volatile gases that may be generated, and to minimize the hazards to human beings and the pollution of the environment.

Post-use treatment: The packaging of sodium carbonate after use should be properly disposed of to avoid the residual sodium carbonate from polluting the environment. For unused sodium carbonate, it should be sealed and stored to prevent it from absorbing moisture and deteriorating. In some industrial applications, the waste water containing sodium carbonate after use needs to be properly treated and meet the environmental emission standards before discharge.
